U of L says there's a chance it could lose its Level One trauma center designation, after several neurosurgeons resigned. But those neurosurgeons say they were fired.
U of L says it remains committed to having the Level One trauma center for seriously injured patients. So, it's actively recruiting new neurosurgeons to fill those openings.
Dr. Chris Shields is one of eight neurosurgeons who say they were fired from U of L after letting them know they were going to work for the Norton Neuroscience Institute. He was also a full-time faculty member at U of L.
But the university says doctors can't be faculty and work for another hospital. Dr. Shields says he was hoping to continue being a part of the faculty. Shields says the group moved to Norton because it can better recruit neurosurgeons for the area.
Dr. Shields says the initial date his group would quit working for U of L was March 31st, but now the group will stay through May 12th.
U of L says in June, it will have what's called a "verification visit" over its accreditation as a Level One trauma center.
That means it can handle various types of medical emergencies along with trauma surgery.
