The water sprays up from the ground and in a circle from a wheel that resembles a revolving shower head.
Neighborhood kids and their families enjoy one of the newest spraygrounds just open at Algonquin Park, adjacent to its long-standing swimming pool.
Two more spray parks are due to open before July in Wyandotte and Farnsley Parks, and either this fall or next spring at Shelby Park. The parks will cost about $300,000 each.
"Once you've spent that money, you're pretty much done. They cost about $100 a week to operate where the pools cost us almost $10,000 a week to operate," said Jason Cissell, Metro Parks spokesman.
Four outdoor swimming pools like Camp Taylor do open on Saturday, but just for weekend hours until school's out.
"The outdoor pools will be open this weekend and next weekend, and then every day until August 9th," said Mike Heitz, Metro Parks Director.
High cost and little use is why the city closed Shelby and Breslin Park pools last year. Neighbors of Breslin Park have raised money to try to re-open the pool for a year, but its future is still undecided. Metro Parks wants to replace it with a sprayground.
Metro Parks says last year, attendance at the four outdoor pools was up at least 15 percent from the year before.
