WDRB Fox41 TV JOURNALISM 101

A Partnership with Area High Schools

WDRB Fox 41's News Department is teaming up with eight Louisville-area high schools for a "TV JOURNALISM 101" - a project designed to encourage future broadcast journalists in this region, train them in the techniques they'll need in their future careers and provide exposure for their best current efforts. The Jefferson County Teachers Association (JCTA) and Dairy Queen Grill & Chill are participating as major sponsors.

Five Jefferson County Public High Schools - Ballard, duPont Manual, Fern Creek, Pleasure Ridge Park and Waggener - along with St. Xavier, Jeffersonville and Providence in Clarksville, Indiana will participate. Selected Journalism classes from each school will be assigned to produce a three- to four-minute video news story on an issue of local interest, and a mentor from the Fox 41 News Department will be assigned to each group to personally advise and assist them in their efforts. Mentors will include Fox 41 News anchors Elizabeth Woolsey, David Scott, Candyce Clifft, Barry Bernson, Valerie Chinn, Bennett Haeberle and other key reporters.

The project began this week, and all news stories will be completed and reviewed by Fox 41 News personnel by the week of November 9th. One segment from each school will be featured on "Fox in the Morning" the following week and posted on the Fox41.com website, where viewers will have the opportunity to vote for best production.

The finalists will be announced during Fox 41 newscasts on Wednesday, November 25, and will be featured in a thirty minute news special to air on Thanksgiving day on WDRB. The overall winning school will be announced on that special and awarded a special grand prize, courtesy of JCTA and Dairy Queen.

"With the TV Journalism 101 project, we hope to nurture the seeds of a new generation of journalists here in our own area," said WDRB News Director Barry Fulmer. "We all remember what it took for us to get our start in the profession, and we believe we have a responsibility to lend a hand to the next wave. There's a lot of great young talent right under our noses and we look forward to working with them to hone their skills in a real-world situation."
