It's been seven weeks since a Shepherdsville girl went to China for controversial stem cell treatments to try and help her live longer.

Hailey Goranflo and her mother just returned from China.  Her mother has seen major improvements with Hailey since the transplant.  She's gained weight, is more alert, and no longer has 500 seizures a day.

Friday was five-year-old Hailey's Goranflo's first visit to the pediatrician since she got back from China Thursday morning.

For the past seven weeks, Miranda Goranflo and her daughter Hailey have been in Beijing.  There, Hailey received controversial stem cell treatments and other therapies.

The procedures are designed to reverse the effects of Batten disease, where children have a life expectancy of eight to twelve years.

Before, Hailey would have 500 or more seizures a day.  Now that's down to just five or ten a day.  And pediatrician Dr. Wendy Daly tells Fox 41's Valerie Chinn that there's a lot to be said for the hope that brings.

Miranda says Hailey is also much stronger now and doesn't need to be on oxygen.

The community has raised more than $100,000for Hailey and her three-year-old brother Carter, who has the same disease.  Carter may go to China for the same treatment if a clinical trial in New York doesn't start soon.

In the meantime, the focus is on Hailey, who is continuing to improve.  She is expected to have her second round of stem cell treatments in China in December or January.

She may need a total of three.
