At the Martin Luther King statue on Monday, people gathered to remember the civil rights leader.
2010 also marks the 50th anniversary of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights. The group held a wreath laying ceremony and released balloons to recognize justice and equality.
John Johnson of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights said Monday, "We felt it appropriate when we recognize the great work of Martin Luther King, but also others who have promoted justice and equality. We want to lay the wreath in their memory as we recognize Martin Luther King today."
Also, an annual tradition rolled through the streets of Louisville Monday morning as another honor for Doctor King. The 38th annual motorcade and rally had a better turnout than expected.
1,000 vehicles, including motorcycles, police cars, and fire trucks took part in the motorcade. The motorcade ended at Hill Street Missionary Baptist Church where a memorial service was held to honor the fallen civil rights leader.
